Virgin River is back on Netflix for its highly anticipated third season and we’re so ready to dive back into the Californian town after that dramatic season 2 cliffhanger.

However, while we and the characters may be transported to the idyllic town of Virgin River, the town itself is a purely fictional creation courtesy of author Robyn Carr.

So if Virgin River isn’t a real place, where was the Netflix series filmed and what locations were used in filming season 3?

Season 3: Recap and plot

Season 3 of Virgin River releases on Netflix on July 9th, 2021 and continues the story of Melinda “Mel” Monroe, a nurse, who arrived in the small Californian town of Virgin River to start a new life away from the big city.

The assignment isn’t as easy as first thought as the recent loss of her husband, ongoing relationship drama, health scares, business disputes and murder are problems from the get-go.

Season 2, in particular, left several plot threads hanging as not only was Jack Sheridan shot by an unknown assailant and left fighting for his life but Doc Mullins also had some worrying health news for Hope that he was unable to deliver and there is the ongoing dispute with Emerald Lumber which wants to buy some land in Virgin River.

Ahead of season 3, Netflix has kept decidedly tight-lipped on what events are to unfold but the new season is set to include a funeral, a fire, a divorce, a hurricane and a new romance.

Where was Virgin River season 3 filmed?

  • Virgin River season 3 was filmed in and around Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada.

That’s right, despite being set in a remote Californian town, Virgin River was actually filmed north of the border in Canada.

Vancouver played host to much of the interior studio shooting while many of the gorgeous outdoors locations are located in the rural areas outside of the city.

Mel’s cosy cabin is actually the former caretaker’s house in Vancouver’s Murdo Frazer Park which can be visited by members of the public (pandemic permitting) and also plays host to a golf course.

Instead of housing the park’s caretaker, the cabin is used exclusively used for filming purposes.

The doctor’s surgery where Mel works is also a real location in Vancouver and is located at 122 First Street in New Westminster.

Meanwhile, Jack’s bar is actually the Watershed Grill in Branckendale by the Squamish River, located to the north of Vancouver, which is where fans can also find Shannon Falls, another location used in the series.

And finally, even though season 3 is only releasing on July 9th, production on season 4 is reportedly due to get underway later in the month according to What’s On Netflix.
