We all love a Disney film but thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, new releases from the House of Mouse have been few and far between.
As we enter the second half of 2021, however, a huge slate of Disney-owned films are gearing up for release including new animation Encanto, the first trailer for which was unveiled on July 8th.
The film looks set to be full of Disney’s usual magic and wonder but where is Encanto set?
Encanto: Release date and plot
Encanto – which translates as ‘Charm’ – is due to arrive in cinemas in the US on November 24th while UK fans must wait two days until November 26th.
The charming film, which features music from Lin-Manuel Miranda, centres on the Madrigal family who live in an enchanted town that’s hidden away in the mountains.
Each member of the family possesses an amazing special ability such as superhuman strength or healing – each member except one, Mirabel.
However, when the family’s magic is put under threat, the ungifted Mirabel learns that she may be the only one able to help.
Where is Encanto set?
- Encanto is set in Colombia.
Unlike many films set in Colombia, however, which focus on the country’s infamous drugs trade, Encanto takes on a more charming approach as it explores the culture and people behind the ‘gateway to South America.’
Encanto’s lead actress, Stephanie Beatriz said in a press release: “I’m Colombian on my father’s side, and playing this role fills me with immense pride.”
The newly-released trailer for Encanto also features a song from the upcoming film titled ‘Colombia, Mi Encanto’ which is performed by Grammy-winning artist Carlos Vives who is a native of Santa Marta, Colombia.
Speaking about the film’s music, Carlos said: This song is a celebration of the magical diversity of Colombia,” says Vives. “I can’t wait to see how the music will blend with the images and the characters inspired by the ‘encanto’ of Colombians.”
Like Mirabel actress Stephanie Beatriz, the majority of Encanto’s cast is either Colombian or of Colombian descent.
