Watford have confirmed the signing of former Rangers striker Dapo Mebude on a two-year contract, with a further two-year option.

The Scotland youth international left Rangers at the end of last season and was one of five Ibrox players caught up in a Covid breach earlier in 2021.

The Hornets confirmed Mebude’s signing this afternoon on their official website, as they continue preparations for their return to the Premier League this season.

Mebude ended last season on loan at Scottish Championship side Queen of the South, scoring twice in eleven appearances for the Doonhamers.

The young striker was tipped for the top at Rangers before his progress stalled over the last two years, struggling to force his way into the first-team picture at Ibrox.

At 19, he still has a big future ahead of him though and he’ll be hoping he can get first-team minutes quickly at Watford.

After representing Scotland at various levels up to under-19, Mebude will link up at Watford with international team-mate Sonny Blu Lo-Everton.

Despite impressing for the Academy sides at Rangers, Mebude couldn’t make that leap into the first-team picture with the likes of Alfredo Morelos, Jermain Defoe and Kemar Roofe ahead of him.

The disruption caused by Covid-19 won’t have helped his development – but Mebude did himself no favours by getting caught breaching the restrictions on February and earning a six-game ban.

The striker is quick and regularly muscles defenders off the ball with his impressive upper-body strength and has very good close control.

While it may not have worked out at Rangers for him, the move for Watford will hopefully see him fulfil his undoubted potential.
