Will there be a season 2 of Netflix’s new CGI animated series ‘Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness’ or was it meant to be a standalone title?
When it comes to famous horror franchises, which titles come to mind? Alien, The Conjuring, Saw and Underworld?
These are all very successful and popular franchises within their own right, but there is one specific series that holds a special place in the hearts of gamers…Resident Evil.
Fans recently returned to the classic horror universe for a new story on Netflix, Infinite Darkness, an entirely CG animated series.
However, after consisting of only four short episodes, many fans quickly binged Infinite Darkness and started asking about season 2.
Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness season 2…
- At the time of writing, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness has not been renewed for season 2, but fans should expect the CGI animated horror series to return for another adventure.
Despite no official information, fans can be hopeful that the series will be renewed for season 2 thanks to the wider franchise’s popularity and Netflix’s investment in new animated content.
Unfortunately, the streaming service does not release the official viewership statistics but from the continued interest in the franchise, added by the success of the recent Village game, the series should be popular enough to warrant a second season.
Similarly, Netflix have invested significantly in the anime and animation genre over the past few years. This means that an original title, like Infinite Darkness that is part of a wider franchise, may be more likely to get the greenlight.
The only problem is that the series did have a relatively closed ending, with no direct set-up for a second season. Yes, we had the Tricell reveal, but as many outlets have pointed out, this may be nothing more than a nod to the next video game in the timeline.
Den of Geek also pointed out that Infinite Darkness felt like a CG movie that had been cut into four parts, rather than a traditional limited series; indicating that it may only be a one-off.
Multiple titles could push back season 2 release date…
If Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness is renewed for season 2, there may be some issues with production.
This is because there are already several big Resident Evil titles in the works, including one with Netflix, that could take a higher priority.
The streaming platform is already working on an eight-episode live-action series focusing on two different timelines of ‘Jade’. The first timeline has Jade moving to Raccoon City aged 14, the other is when she is 30 and humanity has been reduced to just 15 million people by monsters.
Similarly, attention will shift towards ‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City’ a live-action movie that releases in November 2021 and a reboot of the first two video games.
Overall, HITC predicts that Infinite Darkness season 2, or a different spin-off CGI series, won’t release until late-2022 or even 2023.
