The God of Mischief is gearing up to deliver his final performance in the stellar Disney+ show Loki, which has left Marvel fans desperate for more each week.
The show’s story arc has been constantly leaning towards the unveiling of who or what has been controlling the Time-Keepers of the Time Variance Authority.
With the finale set to premiere next week, fans already have their theories on who is orchestrating the TVA, and the answer may lie in the comics.
*Major Spoilers Ahead*
The TVA agency is similar to The Adjustment Bureau from the 2011 Matt Damon film of the same name, in that the Time-Keepers work tirelessly to make sure the Multiverse operates on one, single timeline.
It was revealed earlier in the series that the Time-Keepers, believed to be powerful beings who even rivaled Loki’s excellence, were in fact robots being controlled by a greater source.
It has since been Loki, Sylvie and the audience’s quest to find out who the puppet master is, and Marvel’s comics may have a definitive answer.
Who is He Who Remains?
He Who Remains certainly has one of the most ominous alias names in Marvel’s history, and is known as the final director of the TVA from the Citadel at the End of Time – the last existence of the Multiverse.
He Who Remains manifested the Time-Twisters to survive a cataclysmic event and teach the history of the universe to the next existence. Flawed in nature, the beings ended up destroying the universe by traveling backwards instead of forwards, which forced Thor and Jane Foster to step in. The director was then convinced by the heroes to terminate the Time-Twisters.
The Time-Twisters’ fatality caused the current timeline to split into two realities, Earth-794282 and Earth-761243. He Who Remains created the new Time-Keepers within the former reality, leaving the Time Twisters to perish in the latter.
Despite the He Who Remains comic book narrative being intact, this doesn’t mean that Loki will follow suit.
The show has appeared to follow popular arcs before, but branched off into its own variant, meaning the finale could do the same by providing a unique adversary at the head of the TVA.
The show could also present some version of the TVA’s last director, which would serve as an explosive finale for fans to gawk over.
