Where to watch the Val Kilmer documentary

  • The documentary – simply titled Val – is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on Friday, July 23rd 2021. It will then be made available on Prime Video from Friday, August 6th 2021.

So, for those already subscribed to Prime, you can watch it for free from August 6th as part of your subscription. If you’re yet to sign up then they also have a free trial option for new members.

For those who want to see it on the big screen, on the other hand, it’s worth checking if a nearby cinema offers screenings, as it’s not a wide release.

As for what to expect, Val has essentially been filming himself ever since he was a kid and has collected thousands of hours of footage over the decades. Just a few years ago he began working with directors and editors Leo Scott and Ting Po, sorting through the tapes and videos.

This documentary was assembled from the footage and paints a sweeping portrait of the actor’s personal and professional journey up to now. It’s being regarded as an intimate and unmissable piece of work, so you certainly won’t want to miss it.

Forming the perfect diamond

Speaking with Vulture, Val recently opened up about the project and revealed that he “always felt that the stories behind the stories we were telling would make a great film. Reading between the lines chronicling the life of an actor.”

Shedding light on the creative process and collaborating with Leo and Ting, he reflected: “Leo Scott came to the States about a decade back and has been essential in documenting my exploration of Mark Twain as the narrator of what it means to be a real American. Leo is a truly gifted editor and our sensibilities spoke to each other…”

It was this collaborator who ushered Ting into the mix:

“Leo brought on Ting and created the most glorious sizzle reel. It was as if we worked on it for decades (which in many ways, we had). Ting has a way of bringing the past and present together in seamless transition. Leo’s artful precision, Ting’s Oscar-winning talents, and my tenacity seem to form the perfect diamond.”

When questioned about being self-assured at a young age, the actor also clarified: “I didn’t know that I was going to be an actor that people would make documentaries about, but I knew I was an actor.”

The fans offer support

After seeing the trailer, audiences are clearly moved and eager to reach out to the actor on Twitter.

In the promotional footage, we see Val speaking with the help of a voice box. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015, although for some time he kept his condition private. During treatment, he underwent a tracheotomy which affected his ability to talk.

Fans have recently taken the time to share their support:

Val screens in select cinemas from Friday, July 23rd, and on Prime Video from Friday, August 6th 2021.
