Ashley Cole told ITV (07/07/21 at 10:45 pm) that he told Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips that he has ‘big respect’ for him after England beat Denmark to reach the Euro 2020 finals on Wednesday night.

The former left-back shared that it was ‘emotional’ for him and he claimed that Leeds star man has been ‘so solid’ during this tournament.

A lot of these England players were questioned before the tournament started, from Raheem Sterling out wide to Phillips in that sitting role.

But all of them have answered their critics, as England prepare for their first major tournament final since 1966.

Nonetheless, after the game, Cole shared what he said to Phillips in a private chat after the game.

“It’s emotional,” said Cole. “I will say live on air that I had to get Kalvin Phillips here and say to him ‘you know what, big respect’ because I think he has been tremendous during this tournament.

“He’s been so solid. He has been integral in this England team. But it’s brilliant to see these fans here – it has really drained me tonight.”

Both Phillips and his defensive partner in crime, Declan Rice, have been outstanding throughout this tournament.

England have conceded only one goal – and that from a dead-ball situation – so, it just goes to show how crucial the Leeds and West Ham duo have been.

But in a few days time, they face off in the biggest game of their careers when Roberto Mancini’s Italy lock horns with them at Wembley.
