Spurs would be bringing the world’s best centre-back to the Premier League if Leonardo Bonucci arrives from Serie A giants Juventus this summer, according to Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Reports of Bonucci’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.
Heading into Euro 2020, the 34-year-old was being painted as a man out of time, a defensive dinosaur about to be exposed in front of the watching world.
Instead, Juventus’ evergreen defender has stepped up in style, the rock at the heart of an Italy side just 180 minutes away from European glory.
Alongside erstwhile partner Giorgio Chiellini, Bonucci was peerless as the Azzurri knocked out Romelu Lukaku’s Belgium in the quarter-finals on Friday.
So if Juventus consider listening to offers for a man who has lifted eight Serie A titles during two spells at Juventus – Calciomercato suggests Tottenham Hotspur have come calling – Bonucci should have left no doubts regarding his longevity during Euro 2020.
Could Bonucci leave Juventus for Spurs?
According to Bastian Schweinsteiger, 2014 World Cup winner and Bayern Munich legend, there’s no one better in their position than a pair of battle-scarred veterans still going strong in their mid-30s.
With Toby Alderweireld joining Harry Kane in expressing his desire for a fresh start, according to The Athletic, new sporting director Fabio Paratici is under pressure to reinforce an already troublesome Tottenham defence before the end of August.
And if Daniel Levy doesn’t fancy bringing in a man four years older than Ryan Mason, Paratici’s Serie A contacts could come in useful elsewhere.
Spurs are in talks to sign Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu and Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic, with AC Milan contract rebel Alessio Romagnoli another option.
