Young Royals is Netflix’s brand new Swedish series with insight into what happens when a gay teenager is handed the crown and has to choose between his sexuality and his duty as a royal.
Prince Wilhelm is forced to go to Hillerska Boarding School after reckless behaviour, though the punishment finds him love as he meets Simon; this is when things get complicated.
Things get even more complex when Wilhelm’s older brother suddenly dies and the royal crown is handed down to him.
Please note: this contains spoilers from season 1, episode 6.
Young Royals ending explained
The leaked video of Simon and Wilhelm together goes viral: After August (Malte Gårdinger) convinces himself that Wilhelm was humiliating him after he outed his struggling financial situation in front of the Society. He sought revenge and August leaks a video that he took of Simon and Wilhelm together in bed through the school computer.
Sara witnesses these actions and confronts August on his actions, after coming to a deal she agrees to keep it a secret. Sara then tells August how much she admires him and the pair unexpectedly kiss.
Felice tells Wilhelm that it was August who leaked the sex tape and everyone is shocked. “I trusted you. I really trusted you”, are the devastating words Wilhelm says to August.
Wilhelm tells August he is no longer part of the family and calls the Queen to tell her. The Queen exclaims she is protecting the monarchy by not going public and giving consequences to August.
Young Royals Season 1 concludes with Wilhelm hugging Simon in public before getting driven away for the Christmas holidays. This possibly shows Wilhelm taking a step towards embracing his own sexuality.
How episode 6 sets up season 2!
With the turns in which the narratives took and the way in which episode 6 ended, Young Royals could easily return for a second season.
There’s still a lot more to be explored through the characters for example Sara’s deal with August could be expanded on. There could also be so much more to Wilhelm and Simon’s relationship, was that truly the way it was going to end? It must also be questioned whether August will receive punishments for his actions. All of these things could be explored in season 2.
However, we will just have to hold tight until Netflix gets the greenlight for Young Royals to return to our screens again.
