Gary Lineker told Alan Shearer on Match of the Day to ‘please forgive’ him after he brought up a graphic of Tottenham striker Harry Kane and his goals tally at major tournaments.
The TV host himself has scored the most goals for England at major tournaments (10), with Tottenham’s Kane only one being and moving level with Shearer from the weekend.
The Spurs academy product netted a brace as England thrashed Ukraine 4-0 during their quarter-final Euro 2020 showdown.
During their punditry for BBC, Lineker brought up the graphic of Kane moving level with Shearer, as he rubbed it in and joked it was ‘nothing to do with me’.
“Oooh, Alan,” said Lineker. “Please forgive that we keep putting up that graphic up, it has nothing to do with me.”
Rio Ferdinand responded: “You have been asking the whole half to get that graphic back up.”
Shearer also added: “How many times has he asked, seven or eight times?”
Lineker then responded: “Hopefully, he gets past it during this tournament. And if he does then it massively increases England chances.”

If Kane does indeed go past Lineker’s record then there’s no reason why, by the end of it, England shouldn’t be Euro 2020 champions.
Questions may have been asked of Kane during the group stages, but three goals during the knockout stages and he is answering all the doubters.
Kane has never won a major trophy during his career and it would be pretty special if the first was won with his country.
And given that Denmark, Spain and/or Italy stand in their way then there’s no better chance to end all those decades of hurt.
