Celtic are believed to be leading the race for Charlie Wyke – and Sunderland appear to have given up hope of keeping him.

The Bhoys absolutely need to find another striker this summer even if Odsonne Edouard ends up staying at Parkhead.

Albian Ajeti was poor last season, Leigh Griffiths hasn’t looked himself for a while now and Patryk Klimala has moved on to New York Red Bulls.

Celtic’s pursuit of Wyke

Charlie Wyke has been heavily linked with Celtic, especially now he’s a free agent after his Sunderland contract expired last week.

The Northern Echo reported last month that Celtic are ‘increasingly confident’ of signing Wyke, and then added that he preferred the Bhoys over Nottingham Forest after new talks.

It looks like Celtic are in the box seat for Wyke, who smashed 30 goals in all competitions last season whilst adding five assists too.

Lee Johnson comments on Wyke

With Wyke’s deal ending just a matter of days ago, Sunderland fans are keen to learn what the future holds for the 28-year-old – and it seems that boss Lee Johnson isn’t holding out much hope.

Speaking to the Sunderland Echo, Johnson has indicated that the door is ‘ajar’ for Wyke, but the Black Cats are no longer expecting him to stay.

Johnson is 95% sure that Wyke is leaving, and it may well be that he is Celtic-bound if these reports are to be believed.

“Charlie, I would say the door is ajar, but we’re certainly not expecting him to come back,” said Johnson. “I’d say that it would be him coming back to us and saying he wants to talk again, effectively.”

“My gut says that he will move on, I’d say 95% that he’ll move on. But we would leave the door ajar because at the moment, you never know,” he added.
