Rangers star Alfredo Morelos was left out of the squad again last night as Colombia eked through to the semi-finals of Copa America, beating Uruguay on penalties following a 0-0 draw.

Morelos didn’t even make the substitutes for Reinaldo Rueda’s side for the second successive game at the competition, leaving the Rangers striker a frustrated spectator.

Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina was the hero for Colombia, saving two penalties in the shootout, as he overtook Carlos Valderrama as Colombia’s most-capped player of all time with 112.

Duván Zapata, Davinson Sanchez, Yerry Mina and Miguel Borja all scored from the spot to send Colombia through, while Edinsonn Cavani and Luis Suarez netted for the Uruguyans.

Despite having failed to win any of their last four games in the competition now, Colombia will face Argentina in the semi-finals, as they look to win Copa America for the first time in 20 years.

Rangers star’s absence will be frustrating for Gers boss

After Rangers returned to pre-season training earlier this week, Alfredo Morelos’ absence from the Colombian side will be frustrating for the Gers.

While they’ll want Morelos to return to Scotland unscathed, missing out on valuable training with his Ibrox team-mates to watch Colombia from the stands is far from ideal.

Rangers face a massive Champions League qualifier in a month’s time and with Morelos at least a week away from returning to Scotland, Steven Gerrard will be annoyed at seeing his star man kicking his heels on the other side of the planet.
