There have been some incredible horror concepts to emerge from the 2010s, delivered by such modern classics as Get Out, Midsommar, and beyond.
However, arguably one of the very best came courtesy of James DeMonaco’s home-invasion effort: what if all crime was made legal for one night?
This idea alone had genre fans sold, and yet upon the film’s release, many audiences felt that the execution didn’t quite live up to that concept. On the other hand, while the carnage was limited to one single location at first, sequels succeeded in placing viewers at the heart of the nightmare and the mythology of this America has been expanded upon for four more installments now.
The fifth – titled The Forever Purge – arrived on Friday, July 2nd 2021 and fans are already contemplating what the future may have in store.
So, will The Purge 6 materialise?
Is The Purge 6 a possibility?
- Yes, the director has already confirmed that he had an idea for The Purge 6 some months ago and is currently working on it, despite previously believing that the franchise would conclude on The Forever Purge.
While chatting with Dread Central, James DeMonaco revealed:
“Between you and I, man, I really intended for [The Forever Purge] to be the last one … up until four months ago when I woke up and had an idea for [The Purge] 6. I had this idea … I can flip this thing upside down and we can continue this, maybe, in a way that people can enjoy … I’m actually outlining it right now in between these interviews!”
He added: “If the Movie Gods say, ‘People want to see it,’ then we’ll do it. But I always leave it to the audience to tell us if they want more of it. But we’re ready! I have another one if they want it.”
Taking this into consideration, another movie depends on the general audience reception and likely the box-office of the 2021 entry.
With James compelled to resurrect the franchise because of an idea he couldn’t ignore, it’s perhaps hard to imagine the series staying down for long.
Jason Blum “fighting” for another purge
The founder and CEO of Blumhouse Productions recently had a chat with CinemaBlend and it’s clear that he feels there are more nights of mayhem to be had:
“James makes noises about this being the last Purge movie, but I will hear nothing of the kind. I am ferociously fighting to have at least one more, hopefully many more. So I would say the answer to your question is it’s not yet determined for sure. But if I have anything to do with it, I’m going to try and get a few more out of him.”
He did admit, however, that he “would never do a Purge movie… without James. So if he doesn’t want to do it, I’m not going to do anymore.”
Reflecting upon James’ reveal and Jason’s desire for more, things are promising.
Does The Forever Purge warrant a sequel?
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE ENDING OF THE FOREVER PURGE
The latest film explores the fact that, contrary to the aims of the annual event’s creation, crime doesn’t actually cease once the 24 hours is up.
This dystopian vision of the United States is caught in the grip of chaos despite the government’s efforts to suppress violence for 364 days a year.
The ending sees our protagonists succeed in escaping across the border and into Mexico, but this tale is evidently far from over. During the credits, a news anchor details that the government has fallen to a horde of white-supremacist Purgers.
However, a battle is set to commence thanks to Americans standing defiant and preparing to take them down.
If a sixth film surfaces then perhaps we’ll be plunged deep into this bloody battle for a safe America.
