According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United have hijacked Sunderland’s bid to sign Dion Sanderson from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Sanderson, 21, was born near Wolverhampton in Wednesfield, and has now spent 14 years on the books with Wolves.

He’s yet to make a league appearance for the club though, and his lengthy stint at Molineux could be coming to an end.

Newcastle make their move for Sanderson

Sunderland had Sanderson on loan last season, and opened the bidding for his permanent signature with a £1million offer.

Wolves rejected that bid, seeking £2million for the young defender. Now, Newcastle have hijacked Sunderland with a £1.5million offer.

Wolves are likely to reject that bid too, but Newcastle’s offer is closer to the asking price than Sunderland’s attempt.

How did Sanderson perform last season?

Sanderson was so good for Sunderland that boss Lee Johnson branded him a ‘Rolls Royce’ at the back.

The youngster played mostly as a centre back for Sunderland, losing just twice in 17 games when playing there in League One.

Newcastle were seemingly impressed, and could now swoop in to snatch him from under Sunderland’s nose.
