River Plate president Rodolfo D’Onofrio admits that Rangers target Rafael Santos Borre is now a free agent while playing down reports linking the striker with Eintracht Frankfurt, when speaking to ESPN

Heading into the final two months of the transfer window, fans of both Rangers and Frankfurt are already counting down the minutes until the clock strikes 12 on August 31.

Because while Alfredo Morelos has agreed a move to Porto, according to Antena1, Frankfurt are also fearing the departure of a star striker; a man who broke a 45-year club-record while scoring 28 goals in 32 Bundesliga matches last season.

Head coach Oliver Glasner is desperate to keep the ‘extraordinary’ Andre Silva at the Commerzbank Arena.

It’s a fight he appears to be losing, leaving Frankfurt black-eyed and bloodied heading into the new campaign.

Will Rafael Santos Borre replace Alfredo Morelos at Rangers?

So the availability of Santos Borre, a man who has won six trophies in four years at River Plate while scoring goals by the bucketload along the way, is unlikely to go unnoticed.

“His contract ends today, just like Messi’s,” D’Onofrio said.

“Borre is currently experiencing something he always wanted, which is to play for the Colombian National Team.

“I think you have to leave him alone. For the moment, you have to have peace of mind. We agreed to speak again when the Copa América has passed. The decision is up to him.”

“Absolutely nothing came of the Frankfurt thing.”

According to La Nuova Sardegna, Rangers have an advantage over their fellow suitors, with Steven Gerrard’s side set to play Champions League football next season, should they pass through the qualification phase.

Santos Borre has certainly bounced back from a disappointing spell at Atletico Madrid in his younger days too, with Diego Simeone hailing the ‘phenomenal’ development of a striker who didn’t even make a single La Liga appearance in the Spanish capital.
