Arsenal have already signed Nuno Tavares, according to one journalist.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed on Twitter that the Benfica left-back is already in London to undergo a medical.
But Romano added that a £6.8 million transfer fee has been agreed between Arsenal and the Portuguese club, and that Tavares is joining on a five-year deal.
Arsenal need much more
This isn’t all that exciting.
And that’s because being a left-back, it’s pretty obvious that Nuno is being signed only as a squad player.
Kieran Tierney is one of Arsenal’s best players and there’s no way the 21-year-old – who only has 17 league starts under his belt – is going to play ahead of the Scot, if he’s fit.
There’s big question marks over the former Celtic star’s fitness because he is a tad injury prone.
But in terms of ability, Nuno won’t be seriously challenging Tierney and it’s clear Arsenal need a lot more in other areas.
Mikel Arteta’s side finished eighth in the Premier League last season for the second year running.
And although Nuno is a handy addition to the squad, he doesn’t improve the first XI and that, really, should be Arteta and Edu’s primary aim.
