Speaking on Football London’s Periscope, Chris Wheatley has shared what he knows about Ruben Neves and his potential move to Arsenal.

Neves has been linked to Arsenal for quite some time now, but it’s been a while since we’ve had any real update on that front.

Wheatley says that the links may not be as strong as some reports make out, claiming that this is a rumour that is being pushed by Jorge Mendes rather than Arsenal.

What’s been said?

Wheatley was asked

“In terms of Ruben Neves. Look those links came out a few weeks ago, and I haven’t heard anything since. From what I know and from just kind of looking at the situation. It looks like this is an agent-led link,” Wheatley said.

“He’s with Jorge Mendes who is one of the biggest agents in the world, and I think he’s trying to get his client a big summer move to somewhere like Arsenal who would probably be able to pay him a bigger salary than he’s on at Wolves.

“But look, I don’t think that’s one that is likely to happen, but clearly Arsenal like the player, so you can’t really rule it out. Sorry if I’m covering all bases there, but that’s the situation. He’s a player Mikel Arteta likes.”

Mendes at work

Whenever a Jorge Mendes client is linked with your club you have to take it with a small pinch of salt.

Mendes is a super-agent for a reason. He’s got contacts upon contacts in the media and in the sport, and if he wants to drum up interest in his clients, he knows how to do it.

It seems as though he’s trying to broker a move for Neves rather than Arsenal trying to sign the Wolves man, so it doesn’t sound as though this one has legs.

However, as Wheatley says, you can never fully rule anything out, but Neves to Arsenal isn’t advanced at the moment.
