The Times are reporting that Everton director of football, Marcel Brands, had little say in the potential appointment of Rafael Benitez as the club’s new manager.

What’s the story?

Everton are on the verge of appointing former Liverpool boss Benitez as their new manager, according to the report.

However, Brands, who is the Toffees’ director of football, ‘had little say in Benítez’s hiring’.

Farhad Moshiri, the owner, and his business associate Alisher Usmano, are reportedly the ones who are behind the move to bring the former Real Madrid boss to Goodison Park.

Controversial appointment

Benitez is a very good manager, but the problem is that he is a former Liverpool boss.

Everton and Liverpool are Merseyside rivals, and the Goodison Park faithful are not happy that the Spaniard could be in the dugout soon.

Some Everton fans have made it clear that they do not want Benitez.

Benitez’s playing style is not exactly great either.

Yes, the Spaniard is a successful manager, winning the Champions League and the FA Cup with Liverpool, but the football his teams play is not very entertaining.

It will be interesting to see the reception Benitez gets at Goodison Park from the Everton fans, if indeed he is appointed in the role.
