According to the Sunday Mirror (27/02, p77), Tottenham Hotspur are now rivalling Arsenal for the signature of Lyon playmaker Houssem Aouar.

Tottenham don’t yet have a manager in place, but Fabio Paratici will have to get moving in the transfer market with July 1st looming.

Another midfielder could be wanted at Tottenham, and it’s now thought that Aouar is one name on Tottenham’s list.

Tottenham’s pursuit of Aouar

It’s stated that Tottenham want to add creativity in midfield, and Aouar is wanted by Fabio Paratici following his appointment as director of football.

Aouar is contract until 2023, but Lyon want to cash in because they need money. The 22-year-old is one of their most valuable assets, so a big move this summer could happen.

Aouar hit eight goals and four assists in all competitions last summer, and was outstanding alongside Tanguy Ndombele at Lyon before Ndombele’s move to Tottenham, with the duo potentially able to reunite.

Pep Guardiola is a huge fan of Aouar, branding him ‘incredible’ in 2018, and Tottenham would surely love to unleash him on the Premier League next season.

Could Arsenal move for Aouar?

The report notes that Arsenal are long-term admirers of Aouar and made a bid for him last summer, but just couldn’t get a deal done.

The Sun claimed earlier this month that Arsenal are prepared to pay Aouar £100,000-a-week in order to finally join them this summer, and they won’t have predicted Tottenham entering the race.

Yet with Paratici now on board, Tottenham need to start making moves – and stealing Aouar from under Arsenal’s nose would be quite the start.
