Former Rangers defender Fabio Cardoso has edged closer to a surprise move to Porto, three years after leaving Ibrox, after his manager at Santa Clara admitted he’ll need to find a way to fill the gap by Cardoso’s “probable departure.”
Cardoso left Ibrox shortly after Steven Gerrard took charge as Rangers boss, returning to his homeland to join the Azores side when it was quickly clear he had no future in Glasgow.
After helping Santa Clara to their best ever league finish of sixth last season, Cardoso now appears to be on the verge of a stunnig move to Porto and manager Daniel Ramos is preparing to fill the gap left by Cardoso’s exit.
“We have to bridge the possible exit or the probable departure of Fabio Cardoso,” Ramos told Maisfutebol
“Therefore, the entrance to a central. We still have, mainly, for the left wing and right wing positions, open places, probably two, three entries for these positions.”
Rangers spell wasn’t as disastrous as remembered
Cardoso’s stint at Rangers was hardly up there with the likes of Gough, Gascoigne or Goram but there were signs there was a decent player in there – albeit one not suited to the more physical nature of the Scottish league.

It would be interesting to see how Cardoso would have coped with the style of play Steven Gerrard has implemented at Rangers and how the Portuguese defender would have meshed with Connor Goldson.
If he does move to Porto, as expected, he could link up with a former Rangers team-mate in Alfredo Morelos after it was reported El Bufalo had ‘fully agreed’ a move to the Dragons.
