The Daily Record are reporting that Rangers target Billy Gilmour’s immediate future depends on what Chelsea do with Mateo Kovacic.

What’s the story?

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers are interested in signing Gilmour on loan from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has yet to make a decision on whether he will send the 20-year-old out on loan.

The Daily Record has claimed that a well-placed Chelsea source has told them that Gilmour’s immediate future ‘may depend on whether or not Mateo Kovacic stays or leaves the club this summer.’

Rangers could make a bid to sign the former Ibrox prospect on loan if Chelsea decided to send him out on loan.

Norwich City are reportedly leading the race for Gilmour, and Wolverhampton Wanderers have also been linked.

Gilmour clearly has a long-term future at Chelsea, who would prefer to see him play week in and week out in the Premier League.

After all, Chelsea are a Premier League club, and the Blues would want Gilmour to get used to the English top flight.

Yes, Rangers could play in the Champions League next season, but would Gilmour face the same level of competition in the Scottish Premiership as he would in the Premier League?

Kovacic cost £40 million in transfer fees for Chelsea, according to BBC Sport, but the Croatia international has not been a massive success on a personal level and is not guaranteed a place in the starting lineup.
