Britney Spears’ conservatorship trial is currently underway, and the singer mentioned Miley Cyrus in her 20-minute court statement.
Earlier this year, Britney Spears released her documentary Framing Britney Spears which gave fans an insight into her life and conservatorship battle with her father.
The 39-year-old has been in a legal battle with her father Jamie Spears for the last 13 years after he was legally appointed to manage her finances following her 2008 breakdown.
This week, Britney appeared in a Los Angeles court to give a statement on the conservatorship, and there’s one part that’s caught everyone’s attention.
What did she say about Miley Cyrus?
Britney Spears mentions Miley Cyrus in conservatorship statement
On Wednesday (June 23rd), Miley Cyrus spoke in court for 20 minutes about the conservatorship she’s lived under for the past 13 years.
She accused her father of controlling her and said that he should “go to jail” so that she can gain her happiness and freedom back.
However, amongst talking about the conservatorship, she also name-dropped a very famous celebrity, and it’s become a hot topic of conversation on Twitter.
A little way through the speech, she took a swipe at Miley Cyrus and said:
“Ma’am, my dad and anyone involved in this conservatorship and my management who played a key role in punishing me — ma’am, they should be in jail. They’re working for Miley Cyrus as she smokes joints onstage at the VMAs — nothing has ever been done to this generation for doing wrong things.”
What did Britney mean?
The way Britney mentioned Miley has sparked a bit of confusion on Twitter as people try and work out exactly what she meant.
First, Britney said she shared the same management team as Miley, which is actually true. Miley signed with Britney’s manager Larry Rudolph in 2013.
Then, she used Miley as an example of the different treatment they received whilst working under the same management, claiming that Miley can “smoke joints onstage” and not being punished for it.
In November 2013, Miley did smoke weed on stage at the MTV EMA’s in the Netherlands.
So, Britney wasn’t actually shading Miley for smoking weed on stage, she was just using her as an example to prove that they were treated differently by the same managers.
Fans think Miley Cyrus’ Black Mirror episode is about Britney
Following Britney’s court statement, fans are linking her experiences to Miley Cyrus’ Black Mirror episode.
In the Netflix sci-fi series, Miley plays Ashley O, a pop singer who is controlled by her management team, and fans think the storyline closely resembles what’s happening to Britney in real life.
Another said: “Remember seeing that Black Mirror episode where a female pop singer, played by Miley Cyrus, is held captive? Seems that’s what’s going on with Britney.”
“I immediately thought about the Miley Cyrus one after this part of the hearing. I hope Britney can break free like Ashley O did,” a third person added.
