19-year-old singer, Billie Eilish, recently issued an apology to fans after an old clip resurfaced involving a racial slur.

The lyrics in question were from a Tyler, the Creator song.

What is ‘Fish’ by Tyler, the Creator?

Fish is a 2011 song by Tyler, the Creator. Placed in the hip-hop/rap genre of music, the single features some controversial lyrics.

Some listeners theorise that Fish was written about the American serial killer, Albert Fish. Another possible theory is that the song is an extended metaphor, comparing fishing to ‘picking up girls’. However, these theories have never been confirmed or debunked.

Controversial lyrics explored

Tyler, the Creator’s song Fish features a wealth of controversial lyrics that probably would not go down well today.

One listener even commented underneath the YouTube video for Fish, writing: “Imagine if Cancel Twitter heard this? They’d lose their s**t.”

With that being said, Billie Eilish issued an apology for mouthing one line in particular. In a resurfaced clip, a 13 or 14-year-old Eilish can reportedly be seen lip-synching the anti-Asian slur ch**k, which features in the lines: “Slip it in her drink and in the blink of an eye I can make a white girl look ch**k.”

Obviously, the slur is offensive to the Asian community and thus fans urged Eilish to address the situation.

Billie Eilish apologises and Twitter reacts to clip

Since, the Bad Guy singer has taken to social media to apologise to fans.

The artist wrote: “this song was the only time i’d ever heard that word as it was never used around me by anyone in my family.”

She continued: “regardless of my ignorance and age at the time, nothing excuses the fact that it was hurtful. and for that i am sorry.”

Twitter had some strong opinions on the resurfaced clip, expressing disappointment in the singer.

One user tweeted: “Am so disappointed as she should know better. THERE IS NO EXCUSE BILLIE!”

Meanwhile, others defended Eilish, writing: “You cannot hold Billie accountable for not understanding the lyric of a song she didn’t write when she was 13. She was a kid. She apologized for any offence caused, which is more than she needs to do anyways. If people wanna be “woke” and “cancel” her, it’s their stupid loss.”
