Users on TikTok have been going gaga over an account that claims to have the “real Hannah Baker tapes.” However, in reality, the 13 Reasons Why story is a product of the author’s imagination.
13 Reasons Why became an instant hit among fans when it first released in 2017. Following this, the show came up with three more seasons. In 2020, the final episode of the show aired. Now, some people seem to believe the story of Hannah could be real and it is all thanks to TikTok.
Is Hannah Baker’s story real?
13 Reasons Why is partially inspired by author Jane Asher’s relative who tried to commit suicide. There is no real Hannah that exists, and she is just a character created by the author.
At the same time, there are NO real tapes. The idea of having tapes came to Jane after he visited a casino in Las Vegas. He thought about incorporating the theme of tapes into history after listening to a recorded audio guide on a tour of an exhibition about King Tutankhamen of Egypt.
Speaking about this to New York Times, he said: “This would be a really cool format for a book that I had never seen.” Following the success of the book, Jane revealed he plans to write a book that “will go into the complications of high school relationships.”
13 Reasons Why real tapes TikTok debunked
Several people have come across a TikTok page that alleges to have the “real tapes” of Hannah. In reality, there are no real Hannah tapes as it is not a real person.
As of now, the TikTok page has uploaded 20 parts of this tape. It does not come as a surprise that many people thought the tapes were real. In fact, some even wanted to see the picture of real Hannah after they came across the tape.
Unfortunately, the entire thing is made up and done by a fan. It is unclear at the moment who started the page. Nonetheless, they seem to have done a good job in convincing everyone that Hannah was real.
Netflix’s show explored
The first season of the show was closely based on Jane’s book. However, the following seasons decided to shift their attention to real-life incidents. Selena Gomez is the executive producer of the show.
At first 13 Reasons Why had received a lot of backlash after the release of the first season. However, Selena defended the theme of the show.
In an interview, she said: ““The content is complicated, it’s dark and it has moments that are honestly really hard to swallow, I understood that we were going into something that is difficult, but these kids today are so exposed to things that I would never even have comprehended when I was eight. My cousin teaches third grade and they’re doing things and saying things that I couldn’t even fathom. I feel like if this is what we are going to talk about, we might as well do it in a way that’s going to be honest, it’s going to be real, and it stays true to the book.”
