Liverpool have been linked with Youri Tielemans, and Paul Merson’s previous comments on the Leicester City midfielder will encourage the Anfield faithful.

As we covered here on HITC SportHet Nieuwsblad reported late last month that Liverpool want to sign Tielemans as a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum.

Wijnaldum has joined Paris Saint-Germain, and Liverpool need to bring in a replacement midfielder.

Eurosport reported this month that the Belgian will wait until after the Euro 2020 finals to sign a new contract with Leicester.

The midfielder said last week that at the moment he is focused on the Euros.

Sky Sports pundit Merson is a big fan of the Belgium international and predicted him to flourish back when he was on loan at Leicester City from AS Monaco.

Leicester signed Tielemans on a permanent contract in the summer of 2019 after the loan spell.

As reported by The Guardian at the time, the former Premier League champions paid £40 million for the midfielder.

Merson said about Tielemans on Sky Sports News [06/05/2019]: “I think he’s special, I really do, I think this kid is a top, top player.”

The former Arsenal star added: “I think he can go to any of the top four, or top six. If I was Arsenal or Man United, I’d be looking at him all day long, all day long.

“Even Man City should be looking, I think he’s that good. He’s only young, 21. Wow.”

Leicester could not finish in the Premier League top four.

Tielemans could well be tempted to leave the Foxes if Liverpool make a bid.

The Reds ended up third last season and will be determined to reclaim the title from Manchester City in 2021-22.

The 24-year-old made 37 starts and one substitute appearance in the Premier League last season.

The Leicester no.8 scored six goals and gave four assists in those games.
