The circus at Tottenham Hotspur became a little more slapstick on Thursday.
Paulo Fonseca looked certain to be named as Jose Mourinho’s successor in North London.
But talks broke down earlier in the week and immediately after that bombshell, it was reported by TMW that Spurs had turned to Gennaro Gattuso.
And Corriere Dello Sport has reported today that Fonseca feels ‘betrayed’ by Tottenham’s managing director, Fabio Paratici.
The report claims that the former Roma coach did not receive a phonecall from Paratici informing him of the Lilywhites’ intention to hire Gattuso, adding that he found out through the media and that the Portuguese is bitter about it.
No to Gattuso
As it happens, it won’t be Gattuso getting the Tottenham job either.
Daniel Levy is reported to have personally intervened to stop Paratici from hiring the former AC Milan and player and coach.
A ‘NoToGattuso’ hashtag began trending among Spurs fans on Twitter and that was enough for Levy to pull the plug.
Levy and Paratici are now back to square one, two months on from sacking Mourinho.
But ESPN reported on Friday that Erik Ten Hag of Ajax remains a viable target but, the way things are going, Tottenham fans wouldn’t put the mortgage on anybody.
