Roy Keane has praised Newcastle United linked Billy Gilmour ahead of the summer transfer window on ITV.

The Daily Mail say that Steve Bruce would love to sign the Chelsea midfielder in the coming weeks, as he looks to bolster his side’s midfield.

Gilmour has struggled for regular starts at Chelsea, despite being regarded as one of the best young talents in their squad.

And Newcastle feel that he could be available on a loan deal.

Gilmour’s profile could be set to increase over the coming weeks, as he has been selected as part of Scotland’s squad for Euro 2020.

The Tartan Army get their campaign underway today, with Gilmour’s place in their starting line-up yet to be decided.

And when discussing whether the reported Newcastle target should start, Keane revealed his admiration for the central midfielder.

“It’s a bit like Gareth (Southgate) going back to the lads who’ve done well for him over the last year or two,” he said.

“Gilmour is a fantastic young talent and maybe Clarke will say ‘I’ll be loyal to the guys who got us there’.

“But again, a great option because he’s a fantastic young footballer learning his trade. Maybe he comes off the bench.

“Again, very, very good player.”

Great addition?

If Gilmour does impress at the Euro’s that could make things difficult for Newcastle.

Not only would it prove to Chelsea that he could perform at the highest level, but interest could rise.

If Gilmour was to sign for Newcastle, he could help to increase their technical ability in the centre of the pitch and allow them to control possession better in tight matches.
