Frank Lampard has praised Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings’ performance for England yesterday on Match of the Day Live, which was broadcast on the BBC.
Mings came into England’s team and the Villa defender helped his country picked up a clean-sheet in a 1-0 victory over Croatia.
England’s defence were not put under a great deal of pressure, but when called into question Mings had all the answers.
And Lampard feels that the Villa central defender is a real ‘premium’ player due to his attributes.
The former Chelsea manager said: “I think it’s a great balance when you have a player of his attributes.
“He’s a left-footed player and is strong. He can do a lot of things that you look around a lot for. They’re a premium, they defend the box and do the jobs they need to do.”
Mings’ selection was actually questioned going into the game, with Ben White left on the bench.
Mings had looked rather shaky in England’s warm-up games before the competition.
However, he stepped up on the big occasion and formed a very solid partnership with John Stones.
Mings’ place in England’s team now looks assured ahead of their second game in the tournament, which comes against Scotland on Friday evening.
