It is thanks to the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City that the world celebrates Jun as Pride month today.

The uprising was a series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the gay community. It was in response to a police raid that started in the early morning hours of June 28, in 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village in Manhattan.

Lesbian and gay bars as well other neighbourhood places were raided by the cops and people fought back in retaliation. The riots became one of the most important 20th-century events for the LGBTQ community.

The famous rainbow flag that has become a worldwide symbol to represent the pride community was designed by Gilbert Baker and American artist and, gay rights activist.
