Wondering where to watch the Zola movie? Let’s get the 2021 release date explained and whether it will be in theaters or on streaming services.
Over the years, A24 has come to be synonymous with must-see movies.
The entertainment company was founded in 2012 and has been responsible for delivering some of the most acclaimed and beloved films of the past decade.
They have been associated with the likes of Midsommar, Uncut Gems, The Florida Project, Lady Bird, Moonlight, Eighth Grade, and many more, with one of the latest being Zola.
Directed by Janicza Bravo, this American comedy-drama had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival back in January 2020 and the trailer captivated viewers earlier this year.
With its release date fast approaching, let’s consider where to watch the Zola movie…
Where to watch Zola: Will the 2021 movie be in theaters?
- Zola will be screening theatrically in the US from Wednesday, June 30th 2021. There is no news yet regarding a streaming release.
So, it’s worth checking whether your local cinema is offering screenings shortly before it arrives if you want to watch it upon initial release. It’s likely, on the other hand, that it will be available as a rental on streaming services once it concludes its theatrical run.
There is currently no news regarding whether it will be unveiled on the likes of Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video etc.
As for what to expect, the film chronicles the outrageous journey of Zola, a Detroit waitress who becomes friends with a customer named Stefani. Zola is persuaded into joining her on a weekend away in Florida but their paths cross with a range of increasingly dangerous figures.
From Twitter to the big screen
The film is actually inspired by a 148-tweet thread written by Aziah King.
Indeed, the “Y’all wanna hear a story about why me & this bh here fell out? It’s kind of long but full of suspense,” featured in the trailer is quoting from the real Twitter thread that went viral back in 2015.
In it, Aziah told her story, recounting how she was working as a Hooters waitress when she encountered Jess, renamed Stefani in the film. The pair bonded over stripping and other interests before Jess invited her the very next day to join her in Florida, going down there to make money stripping at a string of clubs.
If you’re unfamiliar with the story then you may find it best to go into Zola unaware. However, the surprising tale has been reported upon online if you wish to find out further details.
