Speaking on the BBC Match of the Day Top 10 Podcast, Alan Shearer has been discussing Tottenham favourite Gareth Bale and his career to date.

The Euros are coming back around and Bale is of course the centre of attention once again as Wales attempt to emulate their historic run to the semi-finals in 2016.

Shearer was speaking about Bale’s career as a whole, and he’s been praising the Welshman’s decision to leave Tottenham for Real Madrid back in 2013.

What’s been said?

Shearer praised Bale for deciding to swap Tottenham for Real Madrid, claiming that it was a great decision.

“We’ve seen the best of Gareth Bale. His best was unbelievable and what a career he had, and what a decision he made when he went to Real Madrid, it all worked out well for him there in terms of winning trophies,” Shearer said.

“He was a great talent, he scored some great goals and he was a huge part of what Wales did in the last tournament, but I don’t think they have enough in their squad to get it going the way they did a few years ago.”

As much as Spurs fans may not like to hear it, Bale swapping London for Madrid was a great decision.

Things may have gone downhill towards the end of his time in Madrid, but we’re sure Bale sleeps very well knowing that he has four Champions League winners’ medals in his trophy cabinet as well as the memories of scoring in two Champions League finals.

Sadly, the reality is that leaving Spurs has been a very lucrative move for Bale, and if he’d stayed at Tottenham, he wouldn’t be leaving behind the legacy he’s now forged for himself.

When all is said and done, Bale may go down as the greatest British footballer of all time.
