According to Sky Italia, Liverpool have made a first move for Atalanta defender Cristian Romero by asking about his situation.

Manchester United have been the main name linked with a move for Romero, but they’re yet to actually make a bid for the defender.

Liverpool are now looking to swoop in, and are believed to have been asking about his contract situation ahead of a possible bid.

Who is Liverpool target Cristian Romero?

Romero, 23, started out with Belgrano in Argentina before shining at Genoa. He was loaned back there after a move to Juventus, who then chose to loan him to Atalanta last summer rather than play him.

The 6ft 1in centre back is on loan for another year yet, which Atalanta can turn permanent if they so wish – and given that they consider him untouchable, you’d imagine they will.

Liverpool may have to pay huge money to get Romero; Tuttosport claim that Atalanta want a staggering €60million (£52million) for their star defender.

But what about Konate?

Links to Romero seem strange given that Liverpool just confirmed the signing of RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate in a deal worth £36milliona move fans seem pretty excited about.

Would Liverpool really go and drop another big fee on a centre back? It just doesn’t seem likely when you consider that Jurgen Klopp also has Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, Nathaniel Phillips, Rhys Williams and Ben Davies.

In truth, this feels like agent talk to try and force a United bid, but with Romero praised for dominating Zlatan Ibrahimovic earlier this year, his talent is undeniable.
