Everton’s managerial targets are falling like dominoes in the breeze, their shortlist growing shorter by the day.
David Moyes and Sean Dyche are set to sign new contracts, Rafa Benitez appears to be heading to Turkey while, if Tottenham Hotspur couldn’t come to an agreement with Antonio Conte, why would arguably the greatest ‘league manager’ in world football put pen to paper with mid-table Everton?
Nuno Espirito Santo, meanwhile, appears Crystal Palace-bound (Telegraph).
And the less said about those links with Steven Gerrard the better.
But, amid all the wreckage, one man remains.
Will Everton make Potter their manager?
According to The Athletic, Marcel Brands is a big admirer of Brighton and Hove Albion boss Graham Potter – and no wonder.
Brands and Potter are peas in a footballing pod. Two men who’ve built their philosophies around long-term planning and youth development.
And while they say the table never lies, it has been known to tell a fib or two.
Brighton may have finished 16th in the Premier League last season but the XG table – an accurate reflection of where teams should have ended up based on the quality of chances created or conceded – has the Seagulls in the vertigo-inducing heights of fourth.
Give Potter a clinical centre-forward like Dominic Calvert-Lewin and watch him go.
Pep hails Brighton boss as best of English
Pep Guardiola described the former Ostersunds coach as the “best English manager” around for a reason.
Potter, like Pep himself, boasts that all-too rare ability to coax an extra five, ten, 20 per cent out of players at his disposal, elevating every member of his squad to levels no–one expected them to reach.
Imagine what he could do, then, with a talented and underachieving squad of players like the one he could inherit at Everton?
