Sky Sports News have this evening reported that Arsenal have launched a £35 million bid to sign Norwich City playmaker Emi Buendia.
Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for the Argentine in recent weeks and months.
Speculation mounted earlier this week that the Gunners had seen a £30 million offer knocked back by the newly-promoted Premier League club.
But Sky Sports News have claimed that the North Londoners have bumped up their initial offer by £5 million – which still could be £5 million shy of his £40 million valuation.
The report adds that Arsenal and Aston Villa are ‘in talks‘ over signing the South American, who scored 15 goals and set up 17 in helping the Canaries secure their Premier League return this past season.
If this is true, Arsenal clearly want Buendia in a big way.
But that might suggest that they are pessimistic over keeping Martin Odegaard at the Emirates Stadium for the long term.
The Real Madrid midfielder joined the English club on a half-season loan this past January and enjoyed a productive five months in North London.
But with Carlo Ancelotti back at the Bernabeu, there is some doubt over whether the Italian coach will let him leave on a permanent basis.
And given their intent to sign Buendia – who won the Championship Player of the Year last term – it might indicate that Arsenal don’t believe Odegaard is a viable target.
