Former Rangers B coach Kevin Thomson hasn’t wasted any time in adding new faces to his Kelty Hearts side ahead of his first campaign in charge at the Fifers – and he has pulled off a signing coup by landing former Ibrox midfielder Jamie Barjonas on a free transfer.

Barjonas, who has just left Ibrox after 14 years with the Gers, was confirmed as Kelty’s third signing of the summer yesterday as the ambitious New Central Park side strengthen their squad ahead of their first season in the SPFL.

Barjonas, who has had stints on loan with Bury, Partick Thistle, Raith Rovers and Ayr United, was a regular in the B team in recent seasons and has worked closely with Thomson as part of the Rangers Academy.

Rangers background paying dividends for Kelty

With Thomson taking the reins at Kelty after several years working in Rangers’ Academy, his connections with the Light Blues is paying dividends.

Most would have expected Barjonas to land at a club in the Championship or lower end of the Premiership so to see him end up in League Two is a surprise.

Barjonas should excel at that level though and it wouldn’t be a surprise if his stay in Kelty proves to be a pretty short one.

After only signing a one-year contract with Kelty, Barjonas will likely still see his long-term future at a higher level – but he’s in a great place to go out and make a name for himself away from Ibrox.

Despite being on the fringes of the first-team at Ibrox for years – making his first-team debut under Pedro Caixinha – Barjonas could never cement a regular spot in the side before his contract came to an end this summer.
