Why is Sam not returning to iCarly? Jennette McCurdy won’t reprise her role in the 2021 reboot, so let’s get her absence explained.
There are plenty of shows that are able to transport audiences back to their childhood, and if you grew up in the late 2000s and early 2010s then it’s likely that iCarly possesses that power.
Created by Dan Schneider, the US teen sitcom premiered on Nickelodeon back in 2007 and ran for six seasons up until the final episode – suitably titled ‘iGoodbye’ – in November 2012.
The show has earned a cult following over the years and fans were thrilled to hear that a revival series was in the works.
Miranda Cosgrove, Nathan Kress, Jerry Trainor and Julian Torres are set to return when the show premieres on Paramount+ on Thursday, June 17th 2021. However, fans are already bummed out about an original cast member’s absence. So, why is Sam not returning to iCarly?
Why is Sam not returning to iCarly?
- The actress who portrayed Sam – Jennette McCurdy – won’t return in the reboot because she has given up acting.
On a 2021 episode of the Empty Inside podcast with Anna Faris the 28-year-old explained that she left this career behind a few years ago so she could break into writing and directing instead.
In fact, she revealed that she never actually wanted to get into acting when she was younger: “I was the main financial support for my family. My family didn’t have a lot of money, and this was the way out… always, always, always, acting was difficult for me.”
She addresses that she left acting behind after the passing of her mother in 2013, “because with her death kind of died a lot of her ideas for my life, and that was its own journey, and a difficult one for sure.”
Although iCarly wasn’t explicitly addressed, Jennette suggested she is still embarrassed by her work on the show:
“I’m so ashamed of the parts I’ve done in the past. I resent my career in a lot of ways. I feel so unfulfilled by the roles that I played and felt like it was the most cheesy, embarrassing… My friends at 15, they’re not like, ‘Oh, cool, you’re on this Nickelodeon show.’ It was embarrassing.”
She hasn’t signed on to the revival and it’s uncertain whether or how this will be addressed within the episodes.

Why did Jennette McCurdy quit acting?
As outlined above, Jenette McCurdy quit acting after her mother’s passing because she never really wanted to get into it in the first place.
The roles she played as a teenager embarrassed her, so it was unlikely that she would have hopped aboard the iCarly reboot to do it all over again.
Nevertheless, a number of the original cast members are back to make it a nostalgic treat for fans.
The iCarly revival is scheduled to premiere on Paramount+ on Thursday, June 17th 2021.
