Tennis star Naomi was fined the whopping $15,000 for missing her first press conference at the French Open. The tournament authorities also threatened to kick the four-times Grand Slam Champion, out of the tournament if she repeated this in the future.

Naomi, who is currently the world’s number two player, was sanctioned on Sunday, May 30. The controversy shocked many Tennis fans. Many took to social media to pick sides between Naomi and the French Open 2021 authorities.

The news surfaced on Sunday after Naomi (23) refused to hold a press conference after her opening round 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) victory.

She had defeated Romanian World No.63 Patricia Maria Tig. Naomi made it clear that she planned on refusing to carry out any media obligations, such as news conferences as they were detrimental to her mental health.

She took to her Instagram four days ago on May 27 and posted her statement and reasoning behind refusing to do a press conference.

The Tennis player, equated having to do press conferences right after the game, was like “kicking a person while they are down.”

Naomi also stated, ” we are asked questions that bring doubts in our minds and I’m just not going to subject myself to people that doubt me.”

French Open’s Tweet about Naomi Osaka’s decision

Following Naomi’s statement, Roland Garros (French Open tournament) took to its social media. The now-deleted tweet featured pictures of four players, Rafa Nadal, Kei Nishikori, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff engaging with the media. It was accompanied by a caption that read, “They understood the assignment.”


French Open’s tweet did not go down well on Twitter, many tennis fans rebuked the organisation for berating players and trying to humiliate Naomi. Many Twitter users also deemed the post as petty.

Noami who had announced before the start of the tournament that she would not do any press conferences faced backlash from French Tennis Federation President Gilles Moretton.

Moreover, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), fined her $15,000 for skipping her news conference. She was also warned of possible expulsion from both Roland Garros (French Open) and future Grand Slam, it she refused to attend media conferences.

Norman Ornstein, from American Enterprise Institute, wrote, “The more I see and hear about how top tennis authorities have reacted to Naomi Osaka’s refusal to meet with Media, the more I am simply disgusted with their sexist, ignorant and insensitive behaviour. The people running the French Open and the four majors are thugs.”

Another user wrote, “Simone Biles is penalized for doing a move nobody else can do, Caster Semenya is banned for her biology, Naomi Osaka gets fined & threatened for not talking to the press, Kyrie continues to endure fan violence & NFL said Black players have “lower levels of cognitive functioning.”

Calling Naomi out on Twitter media personality Piers Morgan said, “Get over yourself, playing the mental health card to avoid legitimate media scrutiny is pathetic.”
