The Civil War ended in the spring of 1865 and claimed more lives than any other war or conflict in U.S. history. The sheer amount of dead bodies also required the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries.

However, by the late 1860s, National Memorial Day was being observed in various towns and cities. Civilians paid springtime tributes to the countless fallen soldiers, by decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers for them.
