Speaking on the Highbury Squad YouTube channel, Kevin Campbell has been speaking about Alexandre Lacazette and his future at Arsenal.

The Frenchman is about to enter the final year of his contract at the Emirates, and Campbell believes that the Gunners have to offer him a new deal ahead of next season.

Campbell doesn’t think the Gunners should offer him a long-term contract, but he says a one year extension would be justified.

What’s been said?

Campbell clearly rates Lacazette, claiming that he’s instrumental to the way Mikel Arteta’s side play, stating that he’s more important than Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang when he plays in the number nine role.

“I think an extension of a year would work. Just a year, if he takes it he takes, if he doesn’t you may have to look to trade him, but Lacazette, with the way we play he is instrumental and is more important than Aubameyang when he’s in that number nine role. He’s a great link player, we saw him link up with Smith Rowe and Saka and Martinelli, especially in that Chelsea game and moving on from there proved to be pretty, pretty awesome, so I’d extend him by a year.”

More important than Aubameyang?

Campbell makes a great point about Lacazette being kept on, but is he really more important than Aubameyang?

Well, he’s outscored the Gabon international this season, so that’s something we can’t ignore, and he’s been brilliant when it comes to linking up play with the other attackers.

However, just because Aubameyang has had one bad season, we can’t write off just how important he is to this Arsenal side.

He’s a former Golden Boot winner and on his day he’s one of very few Arsenal players who can win a game on his own.

Lacazette is certainly a vital player, but it’s hard to argue that he’s more important to the Gunners than their captain.
