According to Calciomercato, Liverpool have held talks with the representatives of AC Milan maestro Hakan Çalhanoğlu.
Interestingly, Arsenal have also been speaking to the 27-year-old’s agent, according to Milan Live.
Liverpool and Çalhanoğlu are said to have started discussions, although Jürgen Klopp’s side are yet to submit a formal offer.
Calciomercato state that the 55-cap Turkey international will leave the San Siro, after failing to agree terms on a new contract.
His agent – Gordon Stipic – is believed to be trying to secure his client a contract worth €5 million-a-year, which equates to £83,000-a-week.
Intriguingly, Çalhanoğlu has rejected a multi-million pound offer from Qatar, which suggests to us that he’s still intent on playing at a high level.
In that respect, there are few better places to be right now than Liverpool.
Should he move to Anfield, AC Milan’s No.10 would be joining the likes of Thiago, Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker, in a side who are capable of winning multiple trophies next season.
As aforesaid, the Reds do face competition from Arsenal, who are still seeking to replace the creativity of Mesut Özil.
Who does Çalhanoğlu play like?
Speaking of Özil, Winfried Schäfer – who spent time managing in Germany – believes Çalhanoğlu is just like the former Real Madrid playmaker.
Goal quote him as saying: “Çalhanoğlu is the new Özil. Hakan is an exceptional boy. He has a lot of confidence and courage. He is simply great.”
As far as free agents go, there will be few better freebies on the market this summer than Çalhanoğlu.
In 43 appearances this season, he has scored nine goals, while also providing 12 assists for his teammates.
Çalhanoğlu is also right in the midst of his prime years at 27.
Keep an eye on this one, as Liverpool or Arsenal could land themselves a fine midfielder for absolutely nothing.
