Kevin Thomson’s departure from Rangers to take up the vacant manager’s role at Kelty Hearts has taken Gers fans by surprise on social media – but the Light Blues’ legions have been overwhelmingly supportive of the former Ibrox star’s decision to move on.

After Barry Ferguson’s unexpected decision to move on from the SPFL new boys following their promotion to League Two, the Fifers haven’t wasted time in moving for their new boss by appointing Thomson.

The former Rangers, Hibs, Middlesbrough and Dundee star has been working in the Gers’ Academy for several years and has also built up his own successful private coaching school.

‘Perfect fit’ for Thomson

Thomson thinks Kelty are the “perfect fit” and can’t wait to get started in his first senior role in management, saying: This is the perfect fit for me at the correct stage in my management and coaching career, it’s a club that I know well and I am sure we can achieve success together in the years ahead.

“I can’t wait to get started on the challenge ahead in my 1st managerial job in the SPFL and to get to work with the players and backroom team on the training pitch, I am also really looking forward to meeting the Kelty Hearts supporters and people within the community over the coming weeks and months.”

Kelty will be hoping Thomson can have the same sort of impact as his former Rangers team-mate did as they prepare to welcome SPFL football to New Central Park for the first time in their history.

Rangers fans on Twitter were delighted for Thomson, despite meaning he would leave his role as B team coach at Ibrox – with many hoping to see him return to Rangers as manager in the future.
