Tottenham Hotspur are hoping that Joe Rodon turns into Jan Vertonghen’s replacement in time, Football London report.
Rodon joined Tottenham last summer and has impressed in his fleeting appearances in their first-team.
The 23-year-old seems to have plenty of potential but he, rather bafflingly, was left out of Tottenham’s team after Jose Mourinho’s sacking.
Ryan Mason opted to go for his more experienced players at the back during his time in charge.
And it is claimed that Tottenham do not yet class Rodon as a direct replacement for Vertonghen right now.
Instead Spurs feel as if they still need to buy another centre back to cover for the loss of the Belgian international.
Tottenham heavily pursued Milan Skriniar last summer, but were not able to pull off a deal.
They are now hoping to sign another central defender this summer, but they believe that Rodon can fill Vertonghen’s void in time, such is his potential.
One for the future?
The verdict leaves question marks over just how much Rodon will feature for Tottenham next season.

If he is to be a back-up choice Spurs may be best off sending Rodon out on loan.
The Welshman clearly has the capabilities to play at the top level and his development would surely be better served by playing a season of regular first-team football than spending another year on Tottenham’s bench.
