Newcastle United would be interested in signing Ross Barkley from Chelsea this summer if he becomes available, the Athletic report.
Barkley has spent the past season out on loan at Aston Villa, but his future beyond this summer isn’t known.
With Newcastle looking to add two central midfielders, Barkley is now on the Magpies’ list of possible target.
The same report claims that Newcastle’s budget this summer is very low, so any deal would likely be a loan.
But the England international apparently does appeal to Steve Bruce’s side.
Callum Wilson appeal
If the transfer does go ahead then Newcastle’s Callum Wilson is likely to be delighted with the news.
Wilson raved about Barkley on the Super 6 podcast, calling him ‘unbelievable’ and saying that he wishes that Newcastle signed him last summer, just two months ago.
He said: “I was surprised [Chelsea let him go]. What I would say is that he’s at Villa now, but training with him he’s unreal!
“For me as a striker he’d be a great person to play with, he’d help me score goals.
“I didn’t realise he would’ve gone on loan from Chelsea otherwise I’d have said to the manager you’ve got to bring him up here, he’s unbelievable!”
If Barkley was to arrive at Newcastle he could inject more creativity in the final third into their team.
The thought of seeing Joe Willock and Barkley teaming up in Newcastle’s midfield next season certainly would give Bruce’s team a more dynamic feel to it.
But whether a deal would be possible still is questionable, as Chelsea are likely to receive plenty of interest in the playmaker if they do let him go.
