Hertha Berlin have told ‘genius’ Matheus Cunha that he can leave this summer if the likes of Leeds United or Napoli are willing to put forward £35 million for the Brazilian’s signature, as reported by BILD.

Last summer, the Whites celebrated their return to the big time by shattering a transfer record which had been standing for 20 years, with Spain international Rodrigo Moreno swapping Valencia for West Yorkshire to the tune of £27 million.

12 months on, with a brilliant Premier League campaign under their belt and with American investment swelling the coffers, Rodrigo’s status as the most expensive player in Leeds’ 101-year history could already be under threat.

BILD backs up claims from Kicker, stating that Marcelo Bielsa’s ambitious and increasingly-affluent side have expressed their interest Cunha, one of the most technically-gifted footballers in the whole of the Bundesliga.

Bielsa is reported to have held talks with the Brazil U23 star in January.

Is the Bundesliga ‘genius’ joining Leeds United?

The former RB Leipzig wonderkid signed a one-year contract extension just last week. This, however, was simply an attempt, on behalf of Hertha Berlin, to protect the value of their prized asset.

After narrowly avoiding relegation from the German top flight, Hertha have told Cunha that he is free to leave this summer. But only if one of his many suitors, ranging from Leeds to Napoli, Atalanta to Monaco, are willing to stump up an eye-watering £35 million.

A bundle of Samba-dancing, ball-juggling joy with an eye for the spectacular, Cunha is the very definition of jogo bonito.

The 22-year-old would make Raphinha look like David Batty, such is his penchant for showmanship, although there is a feeling that Cunha needs to add a few boring old tap-ins to those scene-stealing stunners if he is to live up to his vast potential.

Cunha still produced an impressive eight goals and eight assists for an underachieving Hertha side in 2020/21, however.
