Sergio Conceicao won’t replace Nuno Espirito Santo at Wolverhampton Wanderers with A Bola reporting he has agreed a new two-year deal with Portuguese giants FC Porto.

While Tottenham Hotspur appear to have made a spectacular breakthrough in their pursuit of Jose Mourinho’s successor – with the new man and old man one and the same – things are progressing far slower at Molineux.

Those pesky Brexit rules mean Bruno Lage, the former Swansea assistant who led a Joao Felix-inspired Benfica to Primeira Liga glory in 2019, will be blocked from taking over at Wolves.

Another Portuguese title winner in the shape of Conceicao has also been linked with the Black Country post.

However, it seems the 46-year-old former Portugal international will be staying at the Estadio do Dragao instead to steal back the crown from surprise champions Sporting Lisbon.

A Bola reports Conceicao has agreed a contract extension that will tie him down until 2023. The former Nantes boss is expected to earn a staggering £18 million across the next two seasons, figures that would make him the best-paid coach in Portugal.

There’s a silver lining to every story, however.

The Athletic believes Wolves are looking to replace Nuno with a more attack-minded coach, one capable of eking every ounce of potential from the likes of Adama Traore, Pedro Neto and the mercurial Daniel Podence while bringing the fun back to Molineux.

Conceicao is more Jose Mourinho than Pep Guardiola. A defence-first pragmatist who prides himself on success over style.
