AC Milan have decided to sell captain and reported Everton target Alessio Romagnoli with the Rossoneri captain unlikely to be offered a new contract, as reported by Calciomercato.

The form of Fikayo Tomori certainly made this decision a little easier than it might have been.

Since the England international arrived on loan at the San Siro in January, he has been so impressive that Romangoli, Milan’s youngest captain since the legendary Franco Baresi, has had get used to life on the substitute’s bench.

The 26-year-old started just one of the club’s final 11 Serie A fixtures.

And, with the Mino Raiola client due to become a free agent in 2022, Milan have come to the conclusion that it makes more sense to cash in on Romagnoli at the earliest opportunity.

Will Milan’s loss be Everton’s gain?

Directors Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara are in agreement; the former Roma youngster has no future in red and black.

Il Milanista reported in March that Goodison Park is one potential destination for the £18 million-rated Romagoli.

And although Carlo Ancelotti had played down the need for a new central defender, Everton’s dismal performance during the 5-0, final day defeat to Manchester City – plus Yerry Mina’s uncertain future – might just change the manager’s mind.

Of course, given that Milan are yet to agree a permanent deal with Chelsea for Tomori, there is still a chance that Romagnoli’s situation could become a lot more complicated.
