Is Mark Harmon leaving NCIS? Let’s get Gibbs’ season 19 role explained as audiences react to the season 18 finale cliffhanger.
Arguably very few shows boast the legacy of NCIS.
Created by Donald P. Bellisario and Don McGill, the American police procedural served as a spin-off of Jag and began airing on CBS back in September 2003.
Over the years, it has become the favourite TV show of many audiences, and indeed, the fanbase remains incredibly devoted to this day.
The series’ sustained popularity can partly be accounted for by the familiar faces who have stuck around over the years, and perhaps none of the cast remains as beloved as Mark Harmon.
Leroy Jethro Gibbs has been portrayed by the 69-year-old American actor from the start, but there has been concern from fans in the wake of the season 18 finale. So, is Mark Harmon leaving NCIS?
Is Mark Harmon leaving NCIS?
- No, CBS has already confirmed that Mark Harmon will reprise the role of Gibbs in NCIS season 19.
The announcement was made after rumours began to circulate that the actor was ready to leave the role behind. He was contracted until the end of season 18, which encouraged some to believe he would step down.
More recently, the season 18 finale saw Gibbs take his boat out onto the water and the vessel mysteriously blew up in a shocking cliffhanger. This led to further speculation surrounding Mark’s exit.
However, his return is confirmed, although it’s likely he won’t be on screen as much as usual. Cheatsheet highlights that CBS was reportedly going to cancel the show if Mark didn’t return, so negotiations inevitably began to ensure he was locked in for a “handful” of episodes.
Whether he stars in more than that remains to be seen, and CBS Entertainment boss Kelly Kahl has previously commented on the star’s home at NCIS:
“We take it year by year with Mark, we’d love to have him as long as he’d like to be here. Even in this past season, he might have been light in a couple of [episodes], so we’re happy to work around his schedule.”
Rest assured, fans can expect to see Gibbs back in season 19.
Mark Harmon on the future of NCIS
While in conversation with Entertainment Tonight about the future of NCIS, Mark explained:
“Hopefully, there will be a season beyond this that there’s something to look forward to in the future where we’re not going to be wearing the masks and maybe we’re not going to be doing shortened seasons again. We’ll get back to a full order.”
Although there has been talk of reducing Gibbs’ role and the series only being renewed with his cooperation, this suggests that there could be another batch of episodes beyond season 19.
Of course, only time will tell.
