The first trailer for Marvel’s Eternals has arrived ahead of its release in November but just who are the film’s villains, The Deviants?

Marvel’s Eternals has been a long time coming. The film was originally announced in 2018 and was supposed to be released in November last year.

One global pandemic and several release date delays later and we finally have our first glimpse of the Eternals as the trailer for the film has been released.

The teaser introduces us to the titular team of Eternals and gives us hints at their backstory.

However, there’s no sign of the film’s villains, the Deviants, which has left fans asking ‘just who are they?’

Eternals trailer

After giving fans a brief tease in a recent celebration video, Marvel finally unveiled the first trailer for Eternals on May 24th, 2021.

The trailer shows off the various members of the Eternals, chief among them being Gemma Chan’s Sersi and Richard Madden’s Ikaris.

We’re also given a brief history lesson about the Eternals and how they have helped and guided humanity throughout the centuries but after years of not interfering a sudden tragedy and the appearance of an ancient enemy causes them to intervene.

Who are the Deviants?

  • The Deviants are a humanoid race with superhuman abilities and are the ancient enemies of the Eternals.

Both the Eternals and Deviants are humanoid creatures with incredible superpowers and were both created by an alien race known as the Celestials millennia ago as humanity began evolving into homo sapiens.

The Deviants lived alongside the burgeoning human race but was able to mutate and evolve much faster than the homo sapiens, which left many Deviants shunned and exiled for being troll and ogre-like.

As they were created by the Celestials alongside the Eternals, the Deviants saw the Eternals as rivals and have warred against them throughout history.

In the Marvel comics, the Eternals and Deviants eventually called a truce between themselves and humanity after a destructive visit to Earth by the Celestials and later thanks to the invention of the first atomic bomb as they vowed to work together to ensure survival.

Are the Deviants the actual villains?

The Deviants are the Eternals’ traditional villains but there’s nothing to say that there won’t be a twist to come and a secondary villain is revealed.

That would mirror 2019’s Captain Marvel which portrayed the Skrulls as villains at first but later revealed that it was the Kree who were the film’s aggressors while the Skrulls were simply just refugees.

Following the Avengers’ defeating of Thanos in Endgame, the Eternals film would be a great way to set up a return for the Celestials, the ancient alien beings that created the Eternals and Deviants.

We have seen a Celestial in the MCU before as the colony of Knowhere in Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War is made out of a Celestial’s severed head. They’re pretty big.

Thanks to their size and immense power, the Celestials would make for a fascinating main villain in Eternals and could serve as the next big bad of the MCU.
