Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has told friends that sacking Mauricio Pochettino was the worst mistake of his career, amid reports that he could return, The Sun say.

The same publication claims that Tottenham are now giving serious consideration to getting Pochettino back, after struggling without him.

And Levy has apparently privately admitted that he made a big mistake parting company with Pochettino back in 2019.

Levy pushed Pochettino and swiftly appointed Jose Mourinho after Tottenham’s form dipped for months, following defeat in the Champions League final.

Pochettino left Tottenham in 14th place in the Premier League table and in his parting statement Levy said that he was ‘extremely reluctant’ to make the change.

Levy seemed to have a real fascination at that time with appointing Jose Mourinho, who was seen as a high calibre replacement to take Spurs to new heights.

Unfortunately the idea didn’t work out – and most feel that Spurs went backwards under the Portuguese boss’s regime.

Levy now seems to wish that he had given Pochettino more time, but it is also worth saying that method may also not have worked.

Pochettino had called for a squad rebuild at Tottenham, but never managed to make the number of changes that it was assumed he would like.

In his final few months in charge at Spurs, the club had lost their way – and although his successors have failed to take them forward, the club’s downturn did begin under his leadership.

That being said, Tottenham always had an identity under Pochettino and they were in a much better state when he left than they are now.

Pochettino did nothing short of a remarkable job for the bulk of his time at the helm at Spurs, and his appointment would at least help to unify a fan-base which is becoming increasingly frustrated.
