Paul Merson has included Ezri Konsa in his Premier League Team of the Season on Sky Sports, and said that the Aston Villa central defender is every bit as good as Tyrone Mings.
Konsa has caught the eye for Villa this season, with Dean Smith’s side boasting a much improved defensive record.
Since the first lockdown, Villa have tightened up significantly at the back, and Konsa’s form has been a major reason behind that.
Mings is often picked out as Villa’s top defender by neutral fans.
But Merson claims that Konsa is every bit as good as his Villa partner.
“At the back, I’ve gone for a slightly left-field selection in Konsa as I think he could make England’s Euro 2020 squad and he is just as good as his Aston Villa centre-back partner Tyrone Mings,” he said.
Konsa has a genuine chance of making it to the European Championships, as England’s options in central defence are hardly vast.
The problem for the Villa man is that he is not really known to the squad though, as Gareth Southgate has often overlooked him.
Konsa and Villa actually finished the season in style yesterday.
Smith’s side put in another strong defensive showing, as they beat Chelsea 2-1, and claimed an 11th placed finish in the Premier League table, which represents huge progress from last season, where they only narrowly avoided relegation.
